Choosing the right job is incredibly important. If you get stuck in the wrong job it can take a long time to get your career back on the right trajectory. While that is true if you find yourself in the wrong job you should not feel that you have to stay there. Follow our tips to quitting your new job and you will be on your way to a better job in no time.

The story of your CV

When you write your CV you must make sure it tells a story. It should appear to your potential employer that the job they have available is the perfect fit and perfect timing for you. This is the ideal scenario at least and is the reason why so many people advise against quitting a new job. Quitting a job quickly is hard to explain. How can you explain leaving your current job after a couple of weeks or months?

The reality is that not every job is perfect. You could have a bad manager, or the job may not have been exactly what was promised to you in early interviews. Whatever the reason, be honest with a potential employer and they will likely understand. It is important to ensure that you are not seen as a job hopper so if you have some loyalty in other roles on your CV that is a big plus.

Be honest

If you are leaving your job after a couple of weeks you could be tempted to erase it from your employment history. You likely won’t use them for a reference and you may think it is more appealing to have been looking for a job for two months since your last role than to appear like you are deserting a job after just two months.

Although tempting, it is a bad path to take. The reality is that job markets are a lot smaller than you realize. If someone looks into you in a way other than the references you provide they could easily find out about the job you are leaving out and there is no recovering from a lie that big. Always be honest about your employment history.

Leave with dignity

With that in mind, it is important to leave your current job as a professional. Although you have not been there for a long time ensure you do a good handover, ensure all your deadlines are met and ensure you are working hard and diligently until your final day.

Your current short term employers don’t have a strong bond with you so have no reason to be nice if anyone asks. The most you can do is not give them a reason to be nasty.

Don’t leave until you find something better

It is much easier to find a job when you have a job. Potential employers look far more favorably on someone in employment than someone unemployed. Look for a job while you still have yours and you will receive a lot more interest.

Inspect your next job a little better

If you leave one job quickly it makes it impossible to leave a second job quickly. While your CV can recover from a minor blip, two short jobs start to look like a problem. Ensure that you ask the right questions during an interview to get a feel for what your new job will really be like. Check LinkedIn for past staff and ask them if they would mind having a quick chat. It is important to get as many opinions as you can on a role to ensure you know exactly what you are walking into.

You should not stay in a job you hate just because you accepted it. If you navigate your exit properly you exit without any issues and be on the correct career path in no time at all.
